Relief, mystery, concern...reLIEF.
Question: What is wrong with our baby?
Answer: We don't know, maybe nothing, maybe something.
For now, we do know this. Hirschsprung's Disease (HD) is unlikely, however still possible. Unlikely is good, it's better than likely! We like unlikely, a lot.
So, our little man saw the pediatric GI surgeon. Who wondered why we were there at all and not seeing a regular doctor. Because our pediatrician, who you seem to know well referred us to YOU. Because she suspected HD, ahhhhh now he understood. He did a rectal exam on poor baby Drew. Seemed normal, good. The symptoms, although unusual do not line up well for HD. (Good. That's good, but what do they line up to?) However, he thought we should rule it out. This required a barium enema. Anyone who has ever had this done knows, babies are really fond of something like this. Or rectal exams.
Thankfully, the preliminary opinion of the radiologist was that he looked great. No kinks or abnormalities that they could see. However, 1 in 10 people can have HD with normal x-rays. So, there is a chance, but slim. Relief. To be sure, they scheduled him for a biopsy, but because he has to be anesthetised Matt and I are wondering whether we should do it or not. Since the chance is slim that this is what is wrong, why risk anesthesia on our little baby? Not sure what to do yet. But of course, another question. If it not HD, then what? What causes him to be SO uncomfortable and have such difficulty...passing? Confused, and relieved.
Matt and I were really holding our breath today. Jumping the gun a little? Maybe, but the pediatrician is the one who said she was suspicious of this. She wanted to have us prepared for what would need to happen if this was the case. I don't think doctors generally freak out their patients for no good reason, maybe some, but not ours. Although I know the possibilty is there that he could have this disease, I sure am relieved that the docs think it slim. This is very good news. But we still need an answer. Some kind of answer.
Thank you all so much for your prayers. We appreciate your positive thoughts and concern.
